Thoughts on my first week as a camp counselor – and some fill ins…

June 13, 2013

Random thoughts:

Almost made it through the first week of camp and can I just tell you all – I’m tired.

I’m tired, but in a good, I’ve accomplished things, way…

This week was all about getting to know the flow of things, the schedule, the groups that come through our room and the way things run.

By now, we (that’s myself and my co-counselor) have met all of the groups that will come through our room – the game zone and the dig – with only one new group tomorrow, I think.

There are so many kids from the littlest campers (3 years old) to our oldest group (8 years old) and all the counselors. I’m starting to remember names, and faces…

The kids are starting to recognize me outside my room. It’s so cute when they come over and look at me, asking if I’m Miss Susi from the game room or the bus. Or better yet, when they come running over for a quick hug out of the blue. Just love that!

I love that I’ll run into my own kids randomly and we can touch base and exchange a hug or a smile… or that Little One comes to my room 3 times a week and each time, she runs in full speed, gives me a giant hug and then walks off to do her own thing and play with her new friends.

At the end of the day, Little One has been coming to my room, before we head over to the bus room, and she always says: “Hi mom, here’s your daughter” with a big smile on her face. She’s having the time of her life and I couldn’t be happier…

All of us are pooped at the end of the day and this week, hubby’s been a real sweetheart and has cooked dinner each night. By next week, I’ll be pitching in again but for now, I’m enjoying the pampering. 🙂

And here, a rainbow, just because…

2. ____is my favorite flavor of _____
3. The thing I remember most vividly about ____________  is _________________
4. When I am honest about it, I really _________________

My answers:

1. Sometimes I wonder if I should go to bed an hour earlier but I know I won’t…

2. Vanilla is my favorite flavor of anything, really… coffee, chai latte, cookies, cakes etc.

3. The thing I remember most vividly about my wedding is the moment of panic after the ceremony started and I couldn’t see my son who was 4 month old at the time and sleeping peacefully in his car seat (on a bench).

4. When I am honest about it, I really dislike having to work out.

You shouldn’t have to workout if your keeping up with all of those kids. I know my grandchildren give me a workout!

Judy, the way I feel tonight, I’d say you are right. 🙂

Oh you just made me so excited about summer. I’ve been looking around for day camps for my son and A. They are expensive and B. I don’t feel comfortable leaving him there with people I don’t know…but if they’re like you…I totally could do it….for maybe a few hours:)

Kimberly, the nice thing is that this camp is at my kids school and there are a lot of teachers there, also, a half-day camp is available for the little ones which makes it a lot easier on them and you! But yes, camp is expensive and I’m so lucky to be able to have all three kids with me…

Kids are great aren’t they and I love they give you random hugs.

They sure have their moments and I truly enjoy this job even with having to clean up a lot of messes! 🙂

Sounds like you’re whole family is having a lot of fun in summer camp! How long will you do that?
Hmm, getting up an hour earlier, now that would be something…

Camp runs for 9 weeks – so one down and 8 more to go!!! Fun, fun, fun… 🙂

I’m sitting here telling myself the same thing….I’ll read 2 more blogs, and then go to bed. Yeah right. ha.
But I actually do like to work out — but I have to change it up all the time or I get bored too quickly.

Camp sounds fun! It was so much fun when I was younger.

I sometimes wonder the opposite – if I should stay up later and try to get more done – but I know if I do I will be a mess in the AM

    • Susi June 17, 2013 at 8:40 pm

See, I’m the opposite. I do more at night but sleep a bit later. 🙂
