Fifth Disease and Follow Friday Four Fill in Fun # {Co-Hosting}

July 18, 2013

As if my poor baby hasn’t been through enough this past week. She was also diagnosed with Fifth Disease today. Yesterday morning, as we were getting off the bus at camp I noticed that her cheeks were a bit flushed. About 20 minutes later, when her group came to my room for playtime, her cheeks were redder and a minor rash appeared on her neck. One of the counselors took her to the nurse and they applied some Benadryl. By the end of the day, she hadn’t really gotten better but she also hadn’t gotten worse. At home, after some back and forth, we decided that we would hold off going to the doctor and continued treating her with Benadryl.

She was in good spirits and the rash didn’t seem to bother her much. She slept through the night but was already on the couch and dressed when I came down early this morning.

Imagine my shock when I saw this…

Her face was swollen on top of the rash and the rash had spread all the way down her arms. Of course, it didn’t help that I had to check with Dr. Google to see what it could be… Online self-diagnosing really isn’t a good idea!!!

Hubby took her to the doctor today and as he and some others (who had seen her picture on Facebook/Instagram) had guessed, she has Fifth Disease. A few days out of the sun, no physical exertion and rest and she will be good as new.

By the time I came home from work this afternoon she was in good spirits. A special day with daddy will do that to my girls.

Little One’s smiling face is a huge relief for this worried mommy.

The rash has also spread to her legs and she goes through some itchy phases but is otherwise fine. According to the literature, the rash may last anywhere between 1 to 3 weeks. The doctor has also said that it appears worse on her because she is so fair – the curse of all that German and Irish blood coursing through her veins!!! 🙂

Thank you all for your kind words, they were much appreciated.

And now, time to full-fill my co-host duties for this week’s Follow Friday Four Fill in Fun…

Each week Hilary of Feeling Beachie plans on listing four statements with a blank for us to fill in on our own blogs. If you want to join the fun and come up with four fill in’s of your own, please email them to her.  If she uses them, she will add you as co-host to the hop! This week’s co-host is moi – I came up with the last two statements!

Hilary and I would LOVE it if you could please help her spread the word about this hop…. So, please tweet, FaceBook share, and add the linky to your post…

This week’s statements:

1. Lately I have been ___ and it is driving me crazy
2. I sometimes have a ____
3 .My favorite type of music is ____ because ___
4. I’m always amazed by how much ___ my _____ can make.

My answers:

1. Lately I have been off the exercise wagon and it’s driving me crazy. I need to get myself motivated and get back on track.

2. I sometimes have a bad habit of reading too late at night and then being tired the next morning.

3. My favorite type of music is pop because I like upbeat and happy tunes I can dance too.

4. I’m always amazed by how much noise my children can make.

And now it’s your turn. Hope you join Hilary and I for some fill in fun! And don’t forget there is still some time to join Nicolette and I for our Focus on Mom challenge!

I agree very much with ‘self diagnosis through Dr. Google is a bad idea’. One that I had way too many times myself 🙂 hope your little one is better real soon.
Hmm not sure if I’ll make it to the 4s this week, being in San Antonio till Saturday night…I’m with you on no. 1 and no.2 if you take computer time and books into the equation 😉

Claudia, that’s exactly why I’m off track – between computer time and reading I never feel motivated anymore after work. But hubby finally got me a little DVD player for the bedroom (my other one broke) so I want to start doing my Pilates again!!! Wish me luck!

I have never heard of Fifth Disease however I remember my children getting some of the weirdest diseases especially in the summer time. Hope your little girl gets well soon.

Little One has had a bit of a rough summer this year. It was also her first real exposure to a school type setting, so I figured things were going to get her – but certainly not like this.

Goodness. I hadn’t heard of it, but I can imagine how you felt when you saw her that morning. Glad to hear she’s doing better. And what a trooper!

    • Susi July 19, 2013 at 9:46 pm

She sure is a trooper. Taking her meds without fussing – something her big brother and sister were never able to do!!!

  • Hilary July 19, 2013 at 6:42 am

Poor youngest – Give her a big get well hug from me – That last picture is great – she looks so happy, you must have been so relieved

thanks for being an amazing co-host – I needed it because I totally botched this week!

    • Susi July 19, 2013 at 9:46 pm

Little One said thank you and is sending hugs back! Anytime on the co-host gig — you know I love it!!! 🙂

  • Karen July 19, 2013 at 8:19 am

Poor girl! I had 5th disease once, the year I was aiding in a pre-K classroom. I picked it up from one of the students and had never heard of it before that. I hope the rash is a short one and that the itching doesn’t get too bad. I’m sending positive thoughts your way!

    • Susi July 19, 2013 at 9:45 pm

Thank you , Karen. We gave her some Benadryl to keep the itching at bay tonight. She was very restless last night and scratched for quite some time!

  • Lisa July 19, 2013 at 2:24 pm

Oh, poor baby. My son had 5th’s and it was horrible. I hope it passes quickly!!

    • Susi July 19, 2013 at 4:34 pm

Thank you Lisa. I hope for the same. Thanks for stopping by. Have a wonderful weekend.

  • Rorybore July 19, 2013 at 10:24 pm

What a trooper Little is. So glad to see her smiling face again.
And I bet these are the times when we don’t mind that noise so much. I remember when Monkey Boy was couch ridden for 3 days and by the 4th I practically begged him to get up and climb the walls (literally…he can climb the hallway walls). Anything to see our babies well again. 🙂

    • Susi July 21, 2013 at 10:32 pm

That’s so very true. Luckily with this one she wasn’t very lethargic. Now of course she has a cough and runny nose so that may change.

  • Tami July 20, 2013 at 2:16 pm

My youngest used to get the same thing every summer. Eventually he grew out of it. We still make sure he wears sunscreen and a shirt outdoors. I know he’s a teenager, but I am still paranoid about him burning. I’m glad you baby girl is okay.

    • Susi July 21, 2013 at 10:33 pm

It’s funny you say that because it says kids usually get it in Spring or early Winter… I do hope this will be the one and only time she has it.

  • Rachael July 21, 2013 at 3:24 pm

I’m glad your little girl is getting better : ) she has a beautiful smile. I’ve been off the exercise wagon too but I’m back on it again tomorrow, that is if I’m not too exhausted from all the running around I have to do! Good luck with the motivation, it can be tough sometimes x

    • Susi July 21, 2013 at 10:34 pm

Thanks, Racheal. I managed 20 minutes on the elliptical and 20 minutes of Pilates today. Trying to work out some kind of schedule. Good luck to you too.

  • Yvonne July 21, 2013 at 9:20 pm

Awww…hope your Little One is doing okay.

It’s hard to stay on track when it comes to exercise. Good luck with it!

    • Susi July 21, 2013 at 10:35 pm

      Thanks, Yvonne – all around.
