Five for Friday and Fill in Fun

October 25, 2013

No post is complete without at least one photo. This is from earlier in the week when our “cold front” was rolling in. It is a bit cooler and feels nice out but I think, I was hoping for a bit more coolness!!! 🙂

You guys, I’m drowning in lice removal treatments right now. Yesterday, we got a call from school that they found lice on Little One – they made it sound like she was infested with them. Thing is, they just checked all the kids a few days ago and she was fine (one child was sent home as far as I know), then she was home sick for two days, goes back to school and all of a sudden has lice. We took her to our pediatrician because try as we might we couldn’t find anything. Both big brother and sister seem fine as well. Well, it took about 20 minutes of searching and the nurse found one nit – ONE nit, when the school nurse made it sound like she had hundreds!!!

Anyways, the pediatrician prescribed us a prescription strength shampoo which not one pharmacy in the area seemed to have – we won’t be able to get it until this afternoon – and then all 5 of us will get treated. Just as a precaution.

I’ve been stripping beds, washing sheets, blankets, pillow cases, vacuuming the WHOLE house (for the second time this week), spraying everything down with lice spray… and there is no end in sight. I’m exhausted!!! And since we can’t do the treatment til later I stripped all the beds again. My poor washing machine and dryer are on overload.

But I tell you, in my almost 13 years as a mom this is the first time I’ve had to deal with this and it’s FREAKING me out. So, better safe than sorry.

Anyways, that’s my story for today!

Here are my 5 for Friday (favorite blog posts) picks for this week…

  • First, I want to share what my friend Greta at G*Funk*ified is up to right now and ask for your support. She’s currently in a duel, a dynamic duel with Laura of Mommy-Miracles. It’s Americans versus Canadians and they both need our support for this virtual 5K to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
  • Katie, at Sluiter Nation, did an awesome job of taking the mystery out of the Common Core curriculum being implemented by school districts nation wide. I’ve heard and read many comments about it – most of them negative, so reading this post was really great!
  • Jennifer recently changed the name of her blog from Just Jennifer to I’m Dancing in the Rain, after a favorite quote of hers. I love it and I love this post she wrote last week even more. Why do people feel the need to be so judgy all the time?
  • This post by Kim of Make Mommy Go Something Something might be hard for some of you to read, it brought tears to my eyes. I’ve told Kimberly repeatedly that she’s the first person who was really able to drive home what it is like dealing with mental illness – she’s a fighter that’s for sure and I know, I’m better for “knowing” her. Stay strong, Kim!!!
  • Some of you may know that I always try to link up with Kristi of live and love out loud and Rebecca of Bumbles and Light for their Nurture Photography Challenges each season. It’s great to meet new people that are interested in photography like I am and also to learn more about photography itself. This week Rebecca highlighted some tips for better photos if you use you phone a lot – and I do, use my phone for most of my day to day photography!

So, there you have it. My 5 favorite posts for this week. Don’t forget to check Nicolette’s pick for social good Friday – I think, the adage “great minds think alike” applies here!!! 🙂

Follow Friday Four Fill in Fun

Each week, Hilary plans on listing four statements with a blank for us to fill in on our own blogs. If you want to join the fun and come up with four fill in’s of your own, please email them to her. If she uses them, she will add you as co-host to the hop! This week’s co-host is Carla from Random Ramblings! she came up with the last two statements!

She would LOVE it if you could please help her spread the word about this hop…. So, please tweet, FaceBook share, and add the linky to your post…

This week’s statements:

1) I wear the color ____ a lot
2) I think that ____ make the _____
3) Ugh! ____ is getting on my nerves!
4) ____ was a major accomplishment ____.

My answers:

1) I wear the color blue a lot. (It’s my favorite and I’ve been told it makes my eyes pop.)

2) I think that kids make the world a better place.

3) Ugh! This lice situation is getting on my nerves!

4) Not screaming was a major accomplishment yesterday.

Ok, peeps, I gotta run and wash some more blankies!!! Hope you all are having great and most of all, lice free day!!!

Yikes, lice!! My head started itching just typing that. Hopefully the one was the one and only!

    Thank you for the shout-out!!

    • Susi October 25, 2013 at 2:27 pm

Greta, how do you think I feel? And I fervently hope so too!!! My pleasure…

  • Laura at Mommy Miracles October 25, 2013 at 2:43 pm

Earlier this summer, my sister and a friend were coming to stay the night. They were on their way home from a summer travelling and needed to crash at my place – no other options. That morning, they discovered they both had lice. I still had to invite them into my house, but I gave them shower caps the moment they walked in the door and spent hours after dinner treating both of their exceptionally long hair and combing it out. Then? The guest room was quarantined for two weeks.

I do not envy you with the lice!

Thank you a million times for sharing the race! 🙂 I really hope it gets more (Canadians) to sign up! 😉

    • Susi October 25, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Wow. That would have freaked me out. I’m doing all I can at home as prevention but what am I supposed to do about school? I mean, I have to send them back… Ugh!
This will be my first race I’m signing up to – oh boy, wish me luck! 🙂

  • Jennifer Hall October 25, 2013 at 3:17 pm

Oh, thank you so much for mentioning my judgy post! Thank you, thank you! Imma have to check out Katie’s on Common Core, because I too only hear bad things and I’m getting really confused.

By the way, My blog title is technically just Dancing in the Rain. The “I’m” is just for effect. 🙂

    • Susi October 25, 2013 at 11:18 pm

Ooops. Sorry about that. I wasn’t 100% sure about it. But now I know!!! 🙂

  • Janice / GatheringGraces October 25, 2013 at 7:12 pm

Lice situation, eh? I feel for ya. Sorry you have to go through that.
And not screaming for a whole day? Wow. I bow down to you.

    • Susi October 25, 2013 at 11:26 pm

Ha ha. I try not to scream too much but I’ve been known let loose every once in a while. Yeah, the lice situation is no fun.

  • Rorybore October 25, 2013 at 10:04 pm

I have no idea how we have managed to avoid the lice situation. A note comes home pretty much every year that it’s in at least one of my kids classrooms – but so far, I haven’t spotted one on them. But then again….if it takes 20 minutes to find one! Not sure I’ve been That thorough.
Love Jennifer’s new look – will have to check out those others too.
And yes, you definitely look good in blue — but I think your beautiful eyes would stand out no matter what you wore.

    • Susi October 25, 2013 at 11:23 pm

Thank you, you sweet talker!!! I spent quite some time going through everyone’s hair today and treating it. It’s been another exhausting day!

  • Brooke B. October 25, 2013 at 11:05 pm

I know just how you feel. My older daughter ended up with lice early in the summer from sharing helmets at softball!! Grrr. Took a long time to get rid of and was quite exhausting. I let her go to a sleepover party a few weeks ago, and guess what? It’s back! Ahhhh. I’m ready to scream, too. It’s so frustrating, and so hard to deal with.

    • Susi October 25, 2013 at 11:22 pm

Oh, jeez. Not what I want to hear. I hope that with all the precautions we are taking things won’t be so bad. Good luck to you.

  • Hilary October 26, 2013 at 8:45 am

Oh no… that is the worst!!!

    • Susi October 26, 2013 at 10:23 pm

Yup! Think we have it under control. Fingers crossed.

  • Kimberly October 26, 2013 at 9:29 am

I love you lots babe. Not the lice.
They had an outbreak at my son’s school and I was ready with the clippers. Thankfully, he didn’t bring it home with him. Yuck!!

    • Susi October 26, 2013 at 10:22 pm

The boy isn’t much of a problem, he has just enough hair not to look bald and so far both big brother and sister are clear. Found only one on Little One today. Fingers crossed!!!

  • Beth Ann Chiles October 26, 2013 at 10:15 am

Oh no……we never had the lice thing in our house but my sister in law did and it was horrible. Simply horrible. It took forever to get rid of them in her case so I am keeping fingers crossed that it goes much faster for you guys. It is certainly a pain and shame on that school nurse for making you feel like you had a walking epidemic. It is bad enough to know that you have a case let alone made to feel like it is the worst case ever seen. And it is no fault of yours at all. It just happens and once one kid gets it they spread like crazy I am told. One time I had someone come into the church who could not afford the treatments so my job was to go out and get the stuff to give to them. I felt very conspicuous buying it so I can imagine how you feel trying to find the shampoo. Good luck!!! Lice be gone!!!

    • Susi October 26, 2013 at 10:21 pm

Today, I only found one. Big brother and sister are still all clear. Let’s hope it stays that way. 🙂

  • Alison October 27, 2013 at 8:32 am

Ack, sorry about the lice nightmare!
And great posts you’ve highlighted there, Susi.

    • Susi October 28, 2013 at 9:57 pm

Thanks, Alison. Fingers crossed that we’ve made it through this without too much hassle.

  • Claudia October 28, 2013 at 10:07 pm

Oh my, don’t get me started on ‘blue’ – my best friend loves blue. Whenever we went shopping together, she went straight for anything blue she saw and went ‘uh, isn’t that beautiful…’. And then my hubby came into my life and guess what his favorite color is… exactly! Not mine though 😉

    • Susi October 28, 2013 at 10:28 pm

Ha ha. You are surrounded by it. 🙂
