Dangled Carat {A Review}

Ever since I started blogging I’ve been amazed by the number of bloggers who are writers. Over the course of the last few years, I’ve learned that many writers blog to hone and fine-tune their skills and also use their blogs to connect with fans.

I’ve had the pleasure of reading many truly amazing books by fellow bloggers in the past few years, some fiction, most non-fiction, and I love how in some cases the story continues by following their blogs and connecting with them on social media. I love that sense of closeness the blog and social media channels create.

An author or writer is not just that enigma anymore, but a real person, with real feelings and a life. A life that sometimes is quite different than the one in the stories they weave.

But what if you know and love the person who wrote so openly about their life? What if you can talk to that person for hours and hours without catching a breath (just ask our husbands)? What if you actually know a great number of the “characters” appearing in said book? It certainly adds a whole new perspective to reading a blogger’s book.

I can still remember Hilary talking about writing her book and how excited she was just to be working on it and now, here she is, a published author. I can hardly believe it and I’m just super thrilled and exited for her and even so I was one of the select few who received an advance copy of the book, I couldn’t help myself and bought a copy when it became available a few days ago.

Her book is called “Dangled Carat”, it’s the  story about her attempt to convert the ultimate commitment-phobic man into a husband with a lot of help from his family and friends, which can be found everywhere e-books are sold, as well as a print version available at Amazon!

This heartfelt and at times funny, at times maddening memoir shows that there is hope at the end of the tunnel that can be a relationship with a commitment-phobe and that it doesn’t have to end in disaster. Sometimes, with an extra dose of patience and well-meaning friends, even the most commitment-phobic man can be turned into a toting husband. Hilary skillfully weaves the story of her relationship with Marc around events in her childhood, having to wear a back brace for three long years because of scoliosis and losing her father at the age of 14 because of a stroke, and how those events shaped the woman she became and the way she viewed herself. But even though Marc seemingly dragged his feet about marrying her, through-out their relationship he also helped Hilary grow and become more confident. It took him a while, that’s for sure but in the end, all’s well that ends well.

My belief has always been that when two people are in a committed, loving relationship you don’t try to change each other but instead, grow together and make compromises. After reading Hilary’s book, I know that she feels the same way. Well, I kinda knew before, having talked to her about it but her and Marc’s story confirmed it.

I so enjoyed reading the book and often found myself smiling and nodding along, or shaking my head and wiping away a tear here and there.

To celebrate the publication of her book Hilary is hosting a giveaway for a signed copy of Dangled Carat, a $25 gift card to Victoria Secret and a CD by singer Sandi Rose! For more info on the giveaway and to enter, as well as information on the book tour, please visit Hilary here or here!

{Focus on Mom} Link-up July with a Giveaway thrown in

It’s finally here. The {Focus on Mom} challenge that I’ve been hinting at and asking you to prepare for. Are you in?

Nicolette of Working on a Project started this link up sometime last year and after taking some time off to concentrate on her two beautiful daughters, she has decided to bring it back and invited me to be her co-host.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be her partner in crime. Nicolette and I met because of blogging and really hit it off. I wish, we would live closer to be able to spend more time in person with each other!

These are her words:

Every month I challenge myself and you to step out from behind the camera and step in front of it. I ask you to capture the everyday simple moments that years from now you and your family will treasure most regardless of what you were wearing or what type of camera you were using.

For more info on how to join us, please go to Nicolette’s blog. She explained it better than I could.

I still remember the first time I linked up with Nicolette and scrambled around trying to find pics with me in them. Since then I have become a lot more comfortable taking selfies, with or without the kids in it. Sometimes, that’s the only way I will be in the picture!!!

Here are my top ten {Focus on Mom} pics for the past month (mostly)! :)

7-14 grandma and I 7-14 lunch date with grandma

Rarely a Sunday goes by that we don’t see hubby’s grandma for lunch or dinner. It’s more or less a tradition and has been for the past 13 years, more than 20 for the hubby! Grandma is almost 87 and has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s related dementia. She has her good days and her bad. She still knows who we are and even if it gets stressful sometimes, I try to treasure these moments now because it’s hard to know how long it will last.

Middle is my little stylist in training. She loves to help when I color or cut my hair. This was the first time I let her have complete control. She did a great job. I took this selfie the next morning and was very surprised by how many likes it received on both Instagram and Facebook. (I don’t think it’s a great pic.)

family pool fun

This was a red letter day – all 5 of us actually went in the pool together for some family fun. I couldn’t figure out a good way to get myself in the picture without getting the phone wet or accidentally dropping it into the pool. So this was it.

pretty in pink rockstar momma middle and momm

Pretty in pink. I wanted to “commemorate” this look. I really liked the way the outfit came together! The other one is my take on Rockstar Day at camp. Hubby was non too pleased that I cut up his Jane’s Addiction tour shirt. And the last one, double selfies with middle.

mommy and her girl

I really love this one because Middle truly captured how happy I was in that moment holding Little One and my niece and getting to spent that special time together. Pure joy!!! (I had to crop my niece out of the picture because my sister prefers not to have any pictures of her and her family online. It’s a bit of a shame because I would love to share my niece with all of you – she’s a cutie pie.)

the boy and I

This one, what can I say about this one? It’s me and my boy… He’s growing up way, way too fast and I can’t believe how tall he’s gotten. How long do you think it’ll be before he towers over me?

Okay, now it’s your turn. The linky will be up all week. So, get in the picture, focus on you and link up!!! Nicolette and I cannot wait to see what you have to share.

And don’t forget to enter this super cool giveaway for a $25 gift certificate for a journal by Gadanke. Katie has the cutest journals for all occasions, and guess what? She also has lived in Germany for a time. Don’t you just love the connections you make in this fabulous online world?
